Charging Speed Explained

EV Charging Speed Explained: What the Numbers Actually Mean

Charging speed specifications have gotten complicated with all the kilowatt ratings, miles-per-hour claims, and level designations flying around. As someone who spent way too much time understanding these numbers, I learned everything there is to know about what actually affects your charging time. Today, I will share it all with you.

The Three Levels

Probably should have led with this section, honestly—understanding levels clarifies everything else:

Electric vehicle charging at a public station
  • Level 1 (120V): 3-5 miles of range per hour. Standard outlet, included cable. Good for 30-50 miles overnight.
  • Level 2 (240V): 20-40 miles per hour depending on amperage. Home installation required. Full charge overnight.
  • DC Fast (Level 3): 100-250 miles in 30 minutes. Public stations only. Varies significantly by vehicle and charger.

What Affects Your Speed

That’s what makes charging speed endearing to us data-oriented folks—multiple factors interact:

  • Charger amperage: Higher amps = faster Level 2 charging. 32A vs 48A makes real difference.
  • Vehicle acceptance rate: Your car has maximum charging speeds it accepts. Buying a faster charger than your car can use wastes money.
  • Battery state: Charging slows as battery fills. 20-80% is fastest.
  • Temperature: Cold batteries charge slower. Hot batteries may throttle for protection.

Practical Translation

For home charging, Level 2 handles nearly any situation. A 32-amp charger adds roughly 25 miles per hour—more than enough for overnight charging regardless of how much you drove.

Don’t overthink speed for home use. Overnight charging means speed barely matters—you have hours anyway. Focus on reliability and features instead.
