Seattle to Portland Road Trip: EV Charging Stops Along I-5

The Seattle to Portland EV road trip has gotten complicated with all the new charging stations and route options flying around. As someone who makes this drive monthly in an electric vehicle, I learned everything there is to know about the best stops. Today, I will share it all with you.

The Centralia Sweet Spot

Centralia sits almost exactly halfway between Seattle and Portland. The outlets near the freeway have multiple fast charging options. Grab coffee while adding enough range to easily complete the trip.

Do You Even Need to Stop?

That’s what makes this route endearing to us EV drivers — most modern EVs handle the 175-mile trip on a single charge. Leave Seattle with 90 percent and arrive in Portland with plenty to spare. The stop becomes optional rather than mandatory.

Olympia Area Options

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. If you prefer a shorter first leg, Olympia has reliable charging at several locations. The capital city makes a natural break point with food options beyond fast food.

Charging in Portland

Portland has abundant charging infrastructure once you arrive. Downtown garages, shopping centers, and hotels increasingly offer charging. Plan your Portland parking around charger availability and top off while exploring the city.

The Return Trip

Heading north, Woodland and Kelso offer charging options before the longer stretch to Olympia. Wind and elevation changes can affect range differently heading north, so factor that into your planning.
