The Two Main Types
Probably should have led with this section, honestly—for home and Level 2 charging, two connectors dominate:

J1772: Standard for all non-Tesla EVs in North America. Chevy, Ford, Hyundai, BMW—they all use J1772 for Level 2 charging.
Tesla: Proprietary connector that’s physically smaller and handles both Level 2 and Supercharger DC fast charging through the same port.
What This Means For You
That’s what makes adapter availability endearing to us multi-EV households—compatibility is manageable:
- Tesla includes J1772 adapter with vehicles
- J1772 vehicles can use Tesla destination chargers with third-party adapters
- Home chargers come in both connector types
